Characteristics of White Oak Flooring

Oak flooring comes in two varieties: white and red, and each offers unique characteristics. The average white oak is given a higher Janka hardness rating than red oak, and is used in multiple settings other than a traditional flooring option. Barrels to store whiskey, brandy, and other liquors often use a white oak species. It’s also favored in shipmaking as it is more resistant to rotting and mildew than a red oak.

White oak flooring has a consistent light to charcoal-grey undertone. In addition, it tends to be darker and a bit more yellow in hue than red oak. If you are looking for some character in your next wood floors, red oak may be a better option as it tends to feature more prominent and wilder grain patterns. White oak tends to be feature more subtle graining.

Style and Finish Options

You can apply quite a number of customizations to white oak. Our Westfield, NJ customers have the option to choose from a solid or engineered wood construction, the width of their plank, and even the stain and finish.

  • Construction. Oak hardwood comes in a solid or engineered construction, and will be chosen depending on the needs of your project. If you are installing your floors below ground, engineered is the way to go. Laminate or luxury vinyl planks, can imitate the look of white oak flooring on a budget.
  • Plank Width. White oak comes in a variety of plank sizes, ranging from the traditional and standard strip to wider and more rustic sizes (some even up to 12 inches!).
  • Stain & Finish. A stain or a simple clear varnish finish can then be applied to the floors. You can also choose to color stain the floors to your liking; white oak tends to accept stains evenly and easily.

The finish and color that you choose for your oak flooring will make a big impact on the overall look of the room in which it is installed.
